Ayurveda in Sri Lanka

Often referred to as “The Science of Life,” Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest healing traditions. While its origins date back over 10,000 years to India, Sri Lanka has played a significant role in its development. During the era of King Ravana, the island became a center for advanced medical knowledge, leading to the evolution of Hela Wedakama, Sri Lanka’s indigenous medical system. This ancient tradition has influenced other healing systems, including Siddha Ayurveda and modern Ayurveda.

These historical findings highlight the island’s deep-rooted medical wisdom, which continues to be practiced today. Visitors to Sri Lanka often share transformational experiences with Ayurvedic therapies, from herbal treatments to spiritual healing, emphasizing the island’s rich wellness culture.

Sri Lanka's healing legacy is supported by archaeological evidence, such as the world’s oldest known hospital in Mihintale.

The Five Elements & Three Doshas

Ayurveda is based on the concept of the five elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether—which form the foundation of all matter, including the human body. These elements combine to create the three doshas

1. Vata (Air & Ether)

Governs movement, creativity, and communication. Imbalance can lead to anxiety, dry skin, and digestive issues.

2. Pitta (Fire & Water)

Regulates metabolism, digestion, and intelligence. Excess Pitta can cause inflammation, anger, and acidity.

3. Kapha (Earth & Water)

Provides structure, stability, and nourishment. Imbalance results in sluggishness, congestion, and weight gain.

Prakriti & Vikriti: Understanding Your Ayurvedic Constitution

Each person is born with a unique Prakriti, or natural constitution, determined by their dominant dosha(s). When imbalances occur due to lifestyle, diet, or external factors, they lead to Vikriti, or an altered state of health. Ayurveda focuses on restoring harmony by realigning one's Vikriti with their natural Prakriti through personalized treatments, diet, and daily routines.
